Faces of Limerick - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 of the Faces of Limerick Photographic Exhibition was unveiled in the Woodlands House Hotel & Spa, Adare on November 18th, in aid of Cliona's Foundation and The Irish MPS Society.

This project is a long-term (ongoing) goal of Cormac's and he has spent a number of years (so far) photographing people connected with the city; some well known celebrities - and some not so well known - but each with a special Limerick connection.

The first exhibition was held in the Hunt Museum in 2012, in aid of Limerick Special Olympics.

What began as a small guesthouse has grown into one of Ireland’s most beloved family-run hotels, built on a tradition of welcoming every guest like one of their own. Deeply rooted in Limerick life, the Fitzgerald family continue to champion local business,

His legacy in Irish television and theatre is matched only by his pride in his family and his school.

Starting out as a secretary, Angela went on to break barriers as Ireland’s first female steeplejack, founding Collins Steeplejacks and building it into an international business alongside her husband John. Her trailblazing work earned her honours including Ireland’s first Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year and a Bowmaker Award for Irish Industry. Today, her legacy lives on through their children and the same brave steeplejacks who helped her reach new heights.

Camogie runs deep in the Mulcahy family. Niamh, one of Limerick’s most celebrated players, has proudly represented her county for over a decade — following in the footsteps of her mother, former All-Ireland winner Vera. Alongside her sisters Claire, Judith and niece Saoirse, Niamh continues a remarkable family tradition built on passion, teamwork, and pride in the green jersey.Together they embody the spirit of Limerick camogie — skill, resilience, and generations of dedication.

With his quick wit and lively personality, Dermot has earned a loyal following, making him one of the most beloved voices in Irish radio. Beyond his broadcasting career, he’s an accomplished comedian and author, blending humour and storytelling seamlessly. His bestselling book Mind Full reflects his passion for mindfulness and finding calm amid the chaos — a balance he brings to everything he does.

From heading to New York aged 17, getting his pilot’s licence at 25 to setting up a photographic agency Press 22 with Noel Gavin in 1984, Liam said life has been one big adventure. Liam volunteered with Concern for 25 years. He married his best friend Pauline who helped him through his cancer diagnosis in 2009. Also a big Harley Davidson bike enthusiast, getting his biker’s licence at the age of 19.

Representing Gardaí, Fire and Rescue, Paramedics, and Limerick Suicide Watch, these frontline heroes stand together as the people who safeguard our city every day. Whether responding to emergencies, saving lives, offering protection, or providing support in moments of crisis, they are the steady hands and calm voices Limerick depends on.Their courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment remind us that true heroism is found in service - often quiet, often unseen, but always essential.

Harry is one of Limerick's most respected legal professionals. Aidan is a well-known Limerick Jockey whose grit, talent and good humour have made him a familiar face in Irish racing. He has ridden in the Aintree Grand National on multiple occasions, earning respect for his skill and bravery on one of the world's most demanding courses. With a lifelong love of horses and a reputation for hard work in the yard and on the track, Aidan remains a much-loved character in the racing community.

One of Limerick's most iconic hurlers, Gearóid has played a pivotal role in the county's historic era of success. A multiple All-Ireland medal winner and the 2020 Hurler of the Year, he is admired for his power, athleticism, and relentless work rate. Off the field, Gearóid is known for his humility, professionalism, and deep pride in representing Limerick. His influence continues to inspire young players across the county and beyond.

A Trinity College graduate, her credits include The Magdalene Sisters, Moone Boy, Fair City, and the stage tour of Alone It Stands.Frances has become deeply involved in community arts and education, using drama to build confidence and connection. A graduate of University College Cork, she continues to captivate audiences in Ireland and beyond with her range, intensity, and authenticity. With each performance, Leah brings depth and heart representing her hometown with pride on every screen.

Three giants of Limerick hurling, Pat, Joe and Eamonn helped define a golden era in the sport. From Grimes' leadership as All-Ireland winning captain in 1973, to McKenna's scoring brilliance, to Hartigan's commanding presence at full-back, each left an indelible mark on the county's sporting history.Their legacy continues to inspire generations of players who proudly wear the green and white today.

A renowned Limerick photographer and a great character, Michael has spent decades capturing the life, spirit, and people of his city through his lens. From newsrooms to community events, his images have documented moments both historic and everyday, preserving Limerick's stories for generations.

Ciara has proudly represented Ireland at senior international level, earning underage medals at both the European and World Championships. Training at the University of Limerick has been central to her journey, a place she's proud to call home.After a serious injury in 2021 sidelined her for two years, Ciara made a triumphant return this season to win her first national title since then.

Peter's passion is sharing the wonder of magic with children and adults alike — bringing laughter, joy, and amazement to all ages, even if only for a brief moment in time. Through his performances, he reminds us that a little magic can brighten the ordinary and that wonder truly has no age limit.Over the years, he has worked as an illusionist alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, captivating audiences with his charm and skill.

A traditional sign writer based in Limerick City, Tom is celebrated for his craftsmanship and creative collaborations across art, film, and theatre. His hand-painted work brings character to cafés, bars, and businesses, and he has collaborated with artists including John Shinnors, Dorothy Cross, and Eoin Barry.Tom's artistry has featured in The Banshees of Inisherin and onstage in Mike Finn's Wreckquiem. A true craftsman, he continues to combine heritage, design, and heart in every project.

John made history as the first directly-elected Mayor of Limerick, marking a new chapter in the city’s leadership. With a background spanning law, banking, and public service, he has played a role in shaping Limerick's modern transformation — from urban renewal to social inclusion.

A trailblazer for women's football in Ireland, Marion captained the Limerick team that won the first-ever FAI Women's Cup in 1975 at the Markets Field. Two years earlier, she made history as part of Ireland's first women's international soccer team, playing against Wales in 1973.A proud Limerick woman and mother to Tina, Ian, and Eric, Marion's legacy continues to inspire new generations of players.

Maeve is a filmmaker, festival programmer, and actress whose creativity and storytelling have made her a familiar name in Irish arts. A classical crossover soprano and proud Limerick woman, Eve's debut album Songbird (2024) and chart-topping single earned widespread acclaim. Deeply rooted in her community, Eve serves as the 2025 President of Network Ireland Limerick and performs as a soloist with the National Concert Hall's Health and Harmony programme. A natural storyteller, her mission through music is to bring comfort, connection, and joy to all who hear her.

From Moyross, Hayleigh is a primary school teacher and professional martial artist whose journey began at just seven years old. What started as a way to build confidence led to multiple Irish, Five Nations, European, and World titles — including three ISKA World Championships. Through teaching at Hub Martial Arts, she now inspires the next generation with her motto: "Work hard, dream big".

A native of Knockainey, Padraig is the inspirational young speaker and creator of The Paudcast — a bite-sized motivational series that has captured hearts across Ireland and beyond. Living with Down Syndrome, he shares positivity, resilience, and life lessons in his own unique, joyful style.His uplifting messages inspire others to embrace challenges, celebrate differences, and always look on the bright side, making Padraig a sought-after voice in schools, workplaces, and communities nationwide.

Well-known retailer of Eves fashion and former rugby player Michael Murphy shares the frame with his son Barry, a Munster rugby player turned musician with the acclaimed band Hermitage Green. United by creativity, sport, and community spirit, the Murphys embody two generations of Limerick talent and heart, each leaving their own mark on the city's story.

A trained chef who travelled the world, Paul spent over 30 years as a firefighter — kicking down doors and saving lives. Now known as The Firefighting Chef, he’s turning up the heat in a different way, challenging attitudes about plant-based food through his TV and culinary work. Paul’s passion for flavour, health, and positive change continues to inspire audiences everywhere.

On the weekend of 23–25 May 1986, players from Kilcornan GAA Club made history when two seven-a-side teams played continuously for 60 hours and 5 minutes, setting a world record recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. The feat is proudly commemorated in the GAA Museum at Croke Park and remains one of the club’s greatest achievements. Nearly four decades later, the record — and the spirit behind it — still stand strong in Kilcornan.

A self-employed artist, Barbara Hartigan studied at Villiers School and Limerick College of Art before settling in Castleconnell with her husband Leslie in 1970. Honoured as National Housewife of the Year in 1975, she has long balanced creativity, family, and community life. An Honorary Member and Past President of the Limerick Art Society, her portrait collection Putting Names on Faces — published by her children for her 70th birthday celebrates her talent family, and love for Limerick.

Áine is known for her effortless blend of fashion and fearlessness in Irish racing. Equal parts glamour and grit, Áineine has become one of Irish racing’s most respected figures. Combining courage, focus, and a lifelong love of horses, she continues to challenge convention and inspire others to "never be afraid to aim to be the best".

Founding Director of the Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum, Margaret has dedicated her career to preserving local history and promoting tourism in the region. Her vision and commitment have helped make Foynes a landmark destination celebrating Ireland’s aviation heritage. Guided by her own motto —
"Always be proud of where you come from, and do what you can to enhance your community" — Margaret continues to inspire pride in place and people.

Best known to many as "the priest off Emmerdale", Liam has a deep love for jazz, swing, and the soulful side of performance. These days, he's as likely to be found behind a microphone as on a stage or screen. From Bottom Dog Theatre to Shakespeare, from film to live gigs, Liam’s real passion lies in creating work that connects people — especially here at home.

Spent over 20 years working in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at UHL, caring for patients and their families through both joyful and challenging moments. A passionate advocate for organ donation, she continues to support this life-giving cause, believing it represents humanity at its best. In her spare time, Catherine treasures long walks with her dogs, Sandy and Shep, and time spent with her husband Christy, their children Ciarán and Aoife, and her beloved granddaughter Alana — soon to be a big sister.

Known for his charisma and versatility, Kamal's career spans
aviation, television, and film. After winning Mr World 2010, he brought global attention to Limerick and helped raise over €3 million for children's charities. Today, he balances hosting the Irish National Lottery draws with flying for Aer Lingus Regional — all while proudly championing his hometown.

David speaks from experience: he had the privilege of climbing Mount Everest, not just to conquer a mountain, but to prove what's possible with focus and resilience. He believes that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things when they truly commit to their goals; "If you can think it, you can do it."

A skilled modelmaker from Limerick, Bobby works with a range of materials including clay, silicone, and fibreglass.He has a particular passion for sculpting faces — whether large, small, lifelike, or fantastical. Bobby’s attention to detail and love of the craft make each piece a world of its own.

A trailblazer in Irish boxing, Anna has dedicated over four decades to training and mentoring young athletes in Limerick and beyond. As a coach, administrator, and tireless advocate for women in sport, she has played a key role in developing boxing at grassroots and elite levels. Anna's passion, discipline, and belief in her athletes have helped shape champions both in and out of the ring.

Ireland's first male professional classical ballet dancer, Roy is also a celebrated multi-instrumentalist with a long career in performance. He is well known for his many appearances on radio and television, sharing both his music and story with audiences nationwide. His remarkable journey was recently featured in the RTÉ documentary Finné, now available on the RTÉ Player.

Jonathan hears voices — a useful trait for an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker originally from Co. Monaghan. His work blends surrealism with dark comedy, horror, and the messy oddities of human behaviour. Funded by Screen Ireland, RTÉ, the Arts Council and others. He has called Limerick home for the past seven years — ever since he fell for a Limerick man and refused to leave his flat.

Laura is the Director of Marketing, Communications and Public Affairs at the University of Limerick — and a lifelong champion of all things Limerick. At home, she leads a different kind of team: her children Finn and Fiadh, who serve as her sous-chefs, carrot-cake critics, and joyful creators of kitchen chaos.
Together, they prove that baking is equal parts love, laughter, and mess — just the way Laura likes it.

For over forty years, Pat's work as an auctioneer, chartered surveyor, and developer has helped shape the face of modern Limerick. His deep pride in his home city can be seen in landmark regeneration projects including Cruises Street, Steamboat Quay, the Clayton Hotel, and office developments on Henry Street. Through his vision and dedication, Pat has left a lasting mark on Limerick’s landscape and spirit.

Lorcan is best-known for his work with RTÉ Lyric FM, where he shares his love of classical music with audiences nationwide. His warm voice and deep knowledge of the genre have made him a beloved figure among listeners. Lorcan's contributions to Irish radio continue to celebrate and promote the beauty of music and the arts.

John has had the honour of representing the people of Limerick as a member of Limerick County Council, Seanad Éireann, and Dáil Éireann. From 2018 to 2022, he proudly served as Cathaoirleach of the Limerick County GAA Board, guiding and supporting the growth of Gaelic games across the county.
Deeply rooted in public life and sport, John remains passionate about promoting community spirit, teamwork, and pride in Limerick.

One of Ireland's most beloved comedians and actors, Pat has been entertaining audiences for over three decades with his unmistakable wit and warmth. He first rose to fame as part of the comedy duo D'Unbelievables before going on to a successful solo career in television, film, and theatre — including award-winning performances in Garage and The Banshees of Inisherin. Whether making us laugh or moving us with dramatic roles, Pat continues to bring a uniquely Irish voice to every performance.

An Irish professional road cyclist with national titles in both the time trial and road race to her name, Fiona is one of Ireland’s most formidable cycling talents. Rising from Gaelic football and
triathlon, she turned her focus to cycling during Covid and quickly made her mark on the sport.She made history at the Tour de France Femmes as the first Irish rider to win an intermediate sprint — a milestone that reflects her determination, focus, and fearless drive on the road.

A proud Limerick adoptee of 47 years. When the sun is shining, you'll often find him out on his motorbike, enjoying the open road. Off the bike, Gerry's just as content in the kitchen, baking treats for friends and family — with a splash of Jameson for the cake, and one for himself. His faithful golden retriever, Hennessy, keeps him active with long daily walks, and his favourite moments are those spent catching up with friends, whether here in Limerick or back home in Clare.

A celebrated Limerick artist, Billy was a true slave to creativity — equally at home with a paintbrush or a digital canvas. He was happiest when he was making something new, always exploring, experimenting, and bringing ideas to life. Known for his kindness as much as his talent, Billy was a great friend to anyone lucky enough to know him.

Chef and food consultant Tom Flavin and hotelier Sean Lally sha a long connection through Limerick's hospitality scene. Tom, a champion of local food culture for over 30 years, helped shape Limerick's culinary identity, while Sean spent 18 years leading some of the city's best-known hotels - from the Royal George and the Clarion to serving as General Manager of the Limerick Strand.

Lifelong friends and true Limerick entertainers, Tim and Damian have been making audiences laugh for decades. Together, bringing the magic — and mischief — of the stage to life, here as the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella. Whether on stage or off, their friendship and sense of fun shine through. Will they ever grow up? Who knows — but Limerick wouldn’t have it any other way!

For decades, Bridie proudly fed and served the people of Limerick in some of the city’s best-known institutions — from the Cecil Hotel to the Myles Breen Bar and Greenpark Racecourse. Always a friendly face and a steady presence, she became part of the fabric of everyday Limerick life. Through her hard work, warmth and welcome, Bridie created memories for generations of locals and visitors alike.

Greg gained national fame for his impressive performances on the rugby sevens circuit representing Ireland 7s at the Olympics (Tokyo 2020). Studied law in University of Limerick.

A much-loved figure in Limerick, Fr. Joe Young has dedicated his life to faith, community, and compassion. Known for his kindness, gentle humour, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life, Fr. Joe has brought comfort and inspiration to countless families over the years.

Pa has earned a reputation for his incredible feats of strength and athleticism. Known for his powerful performances in strength competitions. He is a five-time Ireland's Strongest Man winner and also winner of UK strongest man 2018. Pa’s dedication to his craft has made him an inspiring figure, representing Limerick with pride in the world of strongman competitions.

Fiona has made waves in the swimming world with her performances at European and World Championships. Known for her dedication and resilience, she has represented Ireland in the 2016 Rio Olympics, swimming in the 100M and 200M Breaststroke. Fiona continues to inspire young swimmers across the country with her perseverance and commitment to excellence.

Muireann is known for her engaging presence on Ireland AM.
With her warm personality and natural charisma, she has won the hearts of viewers across the country.

John Kiely has led the Limerick Hurling team to multiple All-Ireland titles, solidifying his place as one of the most successful managers in Irish hurling history. His strategic approach and leadership have transformed Limerick into a dominant force in the sport. John’s achievements continue to inspire the next generation of hurlers.

A musician and storyteller from Caherdavin, Emma has spent nearly a decade carving out her place in Ireland’s music scene with honesty and heart.
Her songs, including those from her albums Quiet Giant and Sowing Acorns, explore social and humanitarian themes that reflect the world around us. Passionate and outspoken an animal lover at heart, Emma uses her art to inspire empathy, equality, and change.

A pioneer of modern Irish hairdressing, Niall has elevated Limerick’s salon scene with his trademark blend of artistry, precision, and authenticity. Winner of the prestigious ICON Award, he is celebrated for his creative vision and commitment to excellence — believing that great hair should not only look
amazing but make people feel amazing too. Away from the salon, Niall brings the same energy and flair to the decks as a DJ, proving that creativity fuels everything he does.

Known for her impressive career in the 100m hurdles, Sarah Lavin has represented Ireland on the world stage — including at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics and the Paris 2024 Olympics. With a series of strong performances in both national and international competitions, she has established herself as one of Ireland’s top track and field stars. Sarah’s determination, discipline, and pursuit of excellence continue to inspire athletes across the country.

Gerry - a great Limerick man - can be seen cycling around with his beloved little Jack Russell Phoebe; the cutest and smartest little pet you will see.
Phoebe lives in the mobile home of all mobile homes driven around like she was made for the life.

Through boxing, Lee found strength; through Limerick, he found pride — and through both, peace of mind. A dedicated athlete and advocate for mental health, he believes that while fighting for titles is one thing, fighting for your mental well-being is the greatest victory of all. His story is one of resilience, courage, and the power of community.

Anaesthesiologist in training and lifelong athlete, Carolyn has proudly represented Ireland in swimming, water polo, athletics, and triathlon. Her greatest achievement to date was competing in the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she represented her country, county, and hometown of Newcastle West.
Carolyn continues to balance her passion for sport with her medical career, always striving for excellence in both fields.

Based in Kilmallock, Shane is a proud Limerick man, husband to Vonnie, and father of three grown children. A passionate actor who began on the amateur stage, he now works professionally in film and television — with credits including Killinaskully, Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall, the award-winning documentary Get Collins, and the short film Quiet. Shane also writes and produces short films alongside his longtime friend and collaborator John English.

Dorothy grew up on the North Circular Road, where her father Eddie Walsh worked as a respected auctioneer on O’Connell Street for nearly seven decades. In 1956, she married Ronald Teskey, and together they built a life with their two children, Shirley and Stephen. During Covid, she penned a personal memoir — Stories of My Life — at the request of her family. More recently, her song on TikTok captured 1.6 million views, bringing her voice and charm to a whole new audience.

Proud to call Limerick home, Ciara is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher who has brought Irish dance to stages around the world — including performances with Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. Her true passion lies in nurturing the next generation through Scoil Uí Nualláin (Irish Dance) and her Stage School in musical theatre. Creativity, community, and culture drive her work, but her greatest source of inspiration will always be her family.

In 2024, Seán was named BT Young Scientist & Technologist of the Year for his project VerifyMe — a groundbreaking system that distinguishes between human and AI-generated writing. His work went on to earn second place at the European Competition for Young Scientists and secured him a spot representing the EU at ISEF 2025 in Ohio. Seán now studies Immersive Software
Engineering at the University of Limerick, where he continues to explore his passion for research and the future of technology.

Jackie made history as the first mixed-race athlete to represent Ireland in both football and rugby, earning 13 caps in each sport. Beyond her sporting achievements, she has been a powerful advocate for racial equality and LGBTQ+ inclusion in Irish sport and society. Her recently published autobiography shares her remarkable journey — one of courage, resilience, and pride. Jackie’s legacy continues to inspire new generations of athletes who dare to break barriers.

Alongside her husband Alymer and father-in-law Michael, April raises a small flock of rare Valais Blacknose sheep — affectionately known as the “world’s cutest sheep” — on their farm in Cappagh.
Over the past five years, this gentle Swiss breed has become a shared family passion. Thanks to their growing social media following, visitors from around the world now travel to meet these remarkable animals in person.

An award-winning director and cinematographer, Shane has spent over 15 years creating films, documentaries, and over 140 music videos through his production company, Crude Media. His work has screened at acclaimed festivals worldwide. In 2019, Shane received the Special Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film in Limerick at the Richard Harris International Film Festival — a testament to his creative impact both locally and beyond.

Tattooing since 1999, Ross opened Allstar Tattoo in Limerick in 2008 and has spent his career working both locally and around the world. Known for bringing some of the biggest names in tattooing to Limerick, he has helped elevate the city's status on the global tattoo scene. Passionate about pushing the craft to new heights, Ross remains a driving force in Irish tattoo culture — always keeping Limerick at the heart of it.
